Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst CD/LP (Merge) Conor assembled a special band in Mexico for this recording, known amongst themselves and to friends as The Mystic Valley Band. Members include Nate Walcott, Jason Boesel, Macey Taylor, Nik Freitas, and Taylor Hollingsworth. The result is his first solo album in thirteen years, following "Water" (1993), "Here's To Special Treatment" (1994), and "Soundtrack To My Movie" (1995). In that time, he's recorded and performed in Commander Venus, Park Ave., Desaparecidos, and most notably Bright Eyes, his main musical vehicle for the past decade. LISTEN
Various Artists- American Teen Soundtrack CD(Columbia/Almost Gold/RED) American Teen intimately follows the lives of four teenagers in Warsaw, Indiana through their senior year of high school. The film was directed by Nanette Burstein (On The Ropes, The Kid Stays In The Picture) who previously received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary and the Sundance Special Jury Prize for Documentary. American Teen competed in the Documentary Competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Jury Award for Independent Film Competition, Directing- Documentary. Soundtrack features music from Black Kids, The Ting Tings and MGMT, as well as exclusive tracks from Frou Frou (Jason Bentley remix), Nyles Lannon and Ryan Lindsey.
Buddy Guy- Skin Deep CD(Jive Records/Sony BMG) Skin Deep is the latest album from blues legend Buddy Guy, now a sprightly 72 years old. The album features stellar guest appearances from artists including Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. Any discussion of Buddy Guy invariably involves a recitation of his colossal musical resume and hard-earned accolades. Amongst others, he is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Award winner (5 times), W.C. Handy Blues Award winner (23 times), Billboard Magazine Century Award Winner and a chief guitar influence to rock titans like Hendrix and Clapton.LISTEN
Mike Gordon - The Green Sparrow CD (Rounder/UMGD ) An artist known for his endless creativity and touring stamina, Mike Gordon took 2007 off and dedicated his time to writing this new album. With guest appearances from his Phishmates - Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell - Mike also enlists help from The Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann, Ivan Neville and Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Allman Bros. Band). This record will not disappoint fans in any way! The end result is an eclectic record boasting the former Phish bassist's skillful assimilation of free-form rock & roll, calypso, pop and funk that also showcases an unexpected side to his songwriting. LISTEN
Paul Weller - 22 Dreams CD (Yep Roc) Paul Weller's 22 Dreams is the latest chapter in a creative journey spanning 30 years, with material spanning the full breadth of popular music - rock to classical, avant garde to funk and spoken word to experimental. In addition to a cast of Weller's frequent collaborators, 22 Dreams also features some of the largest beneficiaries of Weller's incalculable musical influence. Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer from Oasis lend their talents to 'Echoes Around the Sun,' a writing collaboration between Weller and Gallagher. Ex-Blur guitarist Graham Coxon appears on 'Black River.' The spirit of collaboration and an in-the-moment creative approach have resulted in one of Weller's most spirited works and one that is sure to expand the artistic canon of the one and only 'Modfather.' RECENT ARRIVALS
Belong - Same Places LP (Table of the Elements) Belong shimmers like a mirage: vaguely discernable, yet always at the edge of an unobtainable horizon. On this release, the group evinces a slow-motion transformation - plate tectonics, wired for sound. The single sprawling track may evoke decay, dissolution, and destruction, but underfoot are tendrils of inexplicable joy. Crushing melancholia and shuddering euphoria, intertwined. LISTEN
Brazilian Girls - New York CityCD (Verve) Third album by the critically acclaimed group expands on their signature, multi-lingual sound while paying respect to their international roots and the city where they got their start. The album also features renowned Senagalese musician Baaba Maal as a guest vocalist on "Internacional," and Kenny Wollesen and The Himalayas on multiple tracks. LISTEN
Clinic - Funf CD/LP (Domino) Ten years of Clinic flipsides are joyously addled but have consistently given a reason to listen beyond the A-sides, covering acid punk to damaged hoedowns and any stops in between. LISTEN
The Faint - FasciinatiionCD/LP (Blank Wav) The Faint's 5th album, is the first in the band's ten- year history to be written, recorded, produced, art directed and released entirely on their own. In certain ways, the album is the most mechanical and precise of the band's work: The vocals sounds less human than ever before; the bass lines are more mangled, keyboards spiral and squeal out of control; electronic pings and stabs invade the melodies; the lyrical anxiety and disdain of previous albums pervades almost every song. LISTEN
Darker My Love - 2CD (Dangerbird) Their sophomore album is awash with the same feedback-filled guitars and pounding rhythms that made their debut a standout, with a newfound sense of melody. "2" demonstrates the band's love of fuzzy, reverb-laden rock 'n' roll and sunburned harmonies that stick in your head long after the needle has left the groove. It plays out like a musical odyssey complete with shimmering guitar anthems, blasts of buoyant pop, and a few surprises. LISTEN
Prints - Just ThoughtsCD (Temporary Residence) The follow-up to their debut stirs the pot with a little more pop, their usual dose of psychedelia, and an intoxicating amount of dance. Navigating the unsteady terrain between mainstream pop icons, classic studio obsessives, and their own experimental leanings, Prints plays it fast and loose while paying close attention to the details, turning out heady dance-pop with a very high replay value. LISTEN
Ida - My Fair, My Dark EPCD/LP (Polyvinyl) This seven song mini album features guest appearances by Levon Helm, Michael Hurley, and Tara Jane O'Neil, and includes covers of songs by John Martyn, Dolly Parton, and Annie Briggs. The 12- inch includes a bonus track, is pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and includes a free digital download card. LISTEN
David Vandervelde - Waiting for the SunriseCD/LP (Secretly Canadian) The first long player from Vandervelde, on the heels of his much loved mini-album debut, "The Moonstation House Band". The material on this release is of higher order, lyrically more personal, and stripped down. He's toured with the likes of Spoon, Blitzen Trapper, and Richard Swift. ANNA'S PICK OF THE WEEK! LISTEN
The Lord Dog Bird - S/TCD/LP (Jagjaguwar) The solo recording project of Colin McCann (Wilderness guitarist). Recorded while Wilderness was on hiatus, this record is a gritty, tactile document of a time spent in self-exploration and flux. The songs are buoyed by melodies that are at once sad and hopeful. The listener is immediately drawn in by their intimacy and honesty, with vocals imparting a sincerity and intensity that often borders on vulnerability. CHRIS' PICK OF THE WEEK! LISTEN

TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES
THURSDAY, AUGUST 7 7pm - Free
Nada Surf Nada Surf is enjoying its second life with its new release, "Lucky." Described as alt-rock or indie rock, Nada Surf builds its audiences with a lot of touring and grassroots support for their lyric-rich music. Like the songs that singer guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot crafted for their previous two albums, "Let Go" in 2003, and "The Weight Is A Gift" in 2005, "Lucky" is rich with images of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. The band counterbalances bittersweet lyrics with musical buoyancy and intimate songs develop into anthems.
Tim Fite Born and raised in rural New Jersey, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim Fite runs the gamut from hip hop to indie rock and alt/country. Deeply steeped in the contrasting traditions of these genres, Tim Fite's "Gone Ain't Gone" bridges a cultural void, connecting a deep- seated respect for our troubled and sonically rich past with a view toward a harrowing yet hopeful future.
